When grandpa rode beneath them upon his courting way,
( A; s( z2 _2 N% R! MFrom the white gate to the homestead they stretched in stately row,7 D, I9 o. }6 I5 ?' K2 K; l
And showered his path with petals, just sixty years ago., ?0 D7 E+ p# \- X! g
His riding suit was spick and span, his jingling bridle rein,1 R# P; h2 P" p' a* e
Was polished to the limit, his top-boots shone again;% S( l4 Z F; j0 D4 I
A mass of youthful vanity, from curly head to toe,
! k! n; R! y0 N, a4 [Was my darling gay young grandpa – just sixty years ago.

' b4 b! h6 H' g& ~4 E' g8 lUpon the broad veranda, demure my grandma sat,
. k# [1 v2 Q/ t, j" AAnd hid her girlish blushes beneath her garden hat,' t3 L- h3 Y4 Y$ _: b" q
Her dainty flowing muslins enfolded her like snow;
, A+ r: E q0 d% q2 |Ah! Very sweet my grandma was, just sixty years ago.$ Q: K, O* z, s* `) B
With sweeping bow and fluttering heart he told his hopes and fears,
( O! S/ D% C7 G( S2 E J8 VAnd grandma gently said him ‘Yea’, mid blushes, smiles and tears.1 z& h: j2 _: j: |3 q4 z- E
When the double-blossomed peach-trees with fruit were bending low,
* L3 b R: f2 p- R8 RGood Father Flynn united them – just sixty years ago." f' k0 |# }& e4 |. k

There’s a sound of mirthful revel in the dear old home to-night,
' Q8 O8 K/ M% y# {Where the merry young folk frolic ‘neath the incandescent light,7 J8 M2 Y& w5 g; m% n# J
Jazzing on the broad veranda, listening to the radio,
- G' e9 |4 U* p9 q0 ~+ yKnowing wonders quite undreamt of in the days of long ago.
. l Z: ]" w9 XOn the vine-enclosed veranda, sits my grandpa in his chair,
. f0 x. D3 S3 z7 F; Y3 e) YAnd the flower-scented night winds stirs the white locks of his hair;
7 u2 ~5 S% C2 }: k0 ]Grandma sits and smiles beside him, happy in the young folks glee," t, Q( l6 R( H: d4 k
Such a dainty dear old lady, ever young at heart is she.8 o7 P* @/ j8 Y) N' p, ^
9 C6 A, ^" w$ n! z& U$ h: z0 qAnd the harvest of their labours in the moonlight stretches wide
1 Z* v$ |+ }9 ]5 [All the land they’ve won and toiled for as they struggled side by side,5 R( e4 Z* L6 [( d; D2 V* B
In their brave old eyes no shadow from the griefs of gone-by years,+ e, F q! @$ t+ s' R- w- f9 r
For their hearts beat high within them – dauntless breed of pioneers.! ]7 w: F6 W2 k1 m
Hand in hand they sit together, while the angels smile above,
+ T2 ?- W" w/ c9 f2 G! GOn their long unbroken record of faith, sacrifice and love;
! c, L/ b1 p7 t& q" s8 SFrom the double-blossomed peach trees come the petals falling slow,0 L* l( O5 e# A! |7 ^6 d
