Story 3:
( v, M4 W3 P1 V Larry Fisher’s victims are telling their stories at the inquiry into the wrongful conviction of David Milgaard this week in Saskatoon. Milgaard spent 23 years in prison for the 1969 murder of Gail Miller. But he was cleared when Fisher was convicted of the crime in 1999. The victims are testifying to help the commission determine if police should have investigated Fisher in 1969 instead of Milgaard. As (name) report the victims all said they weren’t told anything about the man who assaulted them.
, W9 p$ k m j9 u9 g) f In the month leading up to Gail’s murder there were five sexual assaults in Saskatoon. All the crimes occurred in the same neighborhood, and all the victims assured chilling similar details. They were all grabbed from behind, dragged into an alley, forced to undress at knife point and then sexually assaulted. Before David Milgaard was arrested the RCMP told Saskatoon police that Gail Miller’s murder and the assault were committed by the same person. In 1971, Larry Fisher was convicted of the five assaults; however, none of victims was ever told the man who attacked them was in the prison. One victim who can’t be named because of the ban of the publication said she didn’t find out until 20 years later. Then the news came from Milgaard’s mother, Joyce. She told Joyce Milgaard’s lawyer that to this day she has never received an apology or an explanation from the police. % h( \4 L; X2 ?. v' m& z; Y
“Were the police and the prosecutor able to provide you with an explanation?” “No.” “Did you ask them?” “Yes, I did.” “And they gave you the same answer, they don’t know why.” “Over and over again the same answer, we don’t know. Now, I like to know who does know.” “Milgaard and his supporters have always believed that authority concealed Fisher’s conviction. So there was no pressure to reopen the Milgaard’s case. Milgaard’s conviction was overturned in 1993 when the Supreme Court of Canada ordered a new trial Larry Fisher was eventually convicted Miller’s murder based on DNA evidence.
