The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
to their first ministry, to reopen a church
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
, @. F: j# U; W+ Y; e# Oexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
- Q9 z3 S" |+ _2 dtheir church, it was very run down and needed
much work. They set a goal to have everything
: q7 D; u3 w0 F/ H3 b' {done in time to have their first service
on Christmas Eve.
2 Y- h  ?% v9 z$ s' dT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
% S8 g- X  Q1 k* p9 @6 Q1 L) Lpainting, etc, and on December 18
, M$ ]; U" c9 G- L$ x; `& Cwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
% M% x0 A- a4 w5 v* s! \9 J3 @$ fO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
9 m0 W; h" a5 w# t6 e' r9 [of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
beginning about head high.
) F7 N( {5 }" t$ B1 a* {. F4 I# j# j! oT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
0 P% T: v) ?: d1 \and not knowing what else to do but postpone
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
0 _& b- e, l! J2 d9 U; HOn the way he noticed that a local business was
- B* I; ?( U2 k. f; T, D( Shaving a flea market type sale for charity, so he
- `0 e) ?" q* N2 n; S6 I# j5 a; Rstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
$ H) D1 o, G4 U! h$ K& ihandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
7 \' h2 I+ J; [) uwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
embroidered right in the center. It was just  
% S4 F. N- q( v' W2 W% e! S


7 u* e& V* s+ e5 j+ d
: @" z2 d6 j. T9 I2 i+ K% ]: J

7 x/ R& j6 k) ~5 \6 T. Xthe right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
7 V! C9 w! u7 A- N4 d- `& j  jwoman running from the opposite direction was
" O& W) f- _( w7 c' K( ?trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
7 w0 ~! H: b6 A: T3 jinvited her to wait in the warm church for
the next bus 45 minutes later.
" o; ]  p. r0 l  o7 i0 a' R8 ?
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
$ i% r5 Z2 `; Pcould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
3 L& h3 i4 L9 O( V9 V0 Laisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
7 X; h& o$ r3 L  G! w+ @, Lthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
- O) P- V2 g. |' x* U9 W& pit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
* F; y2 o8 b) s- x9 @; j4 qT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
: c- r; H8 G4 f" N2 l( N( ^woman explained that before the war she and
/ D! k' O6 T  `, J  x/ Y6 C0 e' C, @& T( nher husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
* M7 G" R4 U- f( o" h5 Z
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
5 ^; {7 F7 M9 q) gHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
husband or her home again.
T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.
/ q) a; i5 s4 h- n/ J1 ], MThe pastor insisted on driving her home. That
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
side of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn  
( m3 h& V3 z. F; p1 m0 i$ qfor the day for a housecleaning job.
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
# W" C" p1 a3 eEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
spirit were great. At the end of the service, the
pastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
: @, f/ v# e' r% O0 u5 Aand many said that they would return..
! d- x) d+ ?( I5 w2 T! x9 H: LOne older man, whom the pastor recognized
0 I. Y" R' \3 a/ lfrom the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
wasn't leaving.
8 M1 ?2 ]2 `- M. C0 `2 Y7 rThe man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
, j' a5 }  D1 H3 y4 fthe front wall because it was identical to one
that his wife had made years ago when
6 U! L( e+ A& O7 R% Kthey lived in Austria before the war and how
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
! y# [$ j$ w* e! U4 G9 [forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
put in a prison.  He never saw his wife or his home
5 K. H' G, L( G8 j5 |( `again all the 35 years between.
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to
/ Y( P# g8 {; g' K2 b9 ]6 ztake him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
) L7 G$ {0 t" S1 pIsland and to the same house where the pastor
: a, r& k3 p0 c: W2 shad taken the woman three days earlier.
- L' r* `/ L, M6 X6 XHe helped the man climb the three flights of
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas
# E0 B/ _' o& u" Preunion he could ever imagine.

you today, to guide you and protect you as you go
' L  q+ s: P# |, C6 T  Yalong your way. His love is always with you. His
( h( g. M" ?! G  E6 ]4 ]promises are true, and when we give Him all our
cares we know He will see us through.
S o when the road you're traveling seems
difficult at best, just remember I'm here
praying and God will do the rest. Pass this on
