请教former & previous 的使用

第一次听到previously 是在desperate housewife, 每集片头都有回顾，回顾都是previously开头，以为学到了好词，可有一天要表达“以前的学生”时GOOGLE才发现这儿不用previous，而是former, 忙来请教各位专家，这2词如何使用？

Former means "any of the past".
Previous simply means "the one right before", as in a series.

For example: a former president of the USA could be any of the presidents that used to be in that position, but the previous president of the USA right now is George W. Bush.
