The Transition Program
Edmonton Public Schools, is working with community partners to develop a program to support immigrant and refugee students and their families.
* P" I! N: @' {7 F3 i$ k2 jThe program will focus on the strengths of students and families. It is intended for students who are newcomers with significant gaps in learning and limited experience with schooling. Entry into the program is by referral from either of the two locations, families themselves, schools, the English Language Support Services Centre (ELSSC) or community partners.
Two locations will be part of the program, Balwin School and McCauley Transition Centre. They will offer the following supports:

- o1 k0 h9 f. c  L+ i! o; \• academic and language programming;
• vocational and career guidance;
• after school and summer programming;
• social, health and emotional support; and
• family support.

English Language Learner Needs
- L* }" ~/ x5 h+ B! \Families and children new to Edmonton Public Schools can access support through the District’s English Language Support Services Centre (ELSSC). The ELSSC provides families with:
( @) o$ Y) r9 y" u• orientation information and support;
1 ^4 j% B! [: Z; u: `2 S$ z8 h0 V8 C6 a• first language support and cross- cultural support;
5 N/ \' E' b0 A6 g• liaison support between school and home;
• information about settlement and community supports;
• support for parents on how they can help support their children with learning;
# o) z( R7 D0 V+ b8 Y• identifying the stage that their children are at in their English language learning; and
8 A& e2 R* j& T+ n  Z• identifying what kinds of English as a second language programming support will help their children succeed in school.
