What is Cross Country Skiing?. F7 h3 w0 _- m' b' q) }% A2 }2 t
Cross Country Skiing (aka Nordic Skiing or XC Skiing) is, in the opinion of many exercise physiologists and researchers, the world's best aerobic fitness activity. The sport involves simultaneous use of arms and legs utilizing ski equipment including boots, poles, and skis.. R' v" x1 O, o* K) d
! P7 W0 s1 N$ q) Q8 R5 e
The primary functional difference between Cross Country Skiing (XC) and alpine (downhill) skiing is that in XC skiing, the skier is attached to the ski only with the toe of the boot--with the heel "free". In alpine skiing, the entire foot is attached to the ski. The free heel allows a XC skier to climb, descend and traverse terrain making the sport a truly "cross country" activity. In alpine skiing and snowboarding, the participant is limited to the range of downhill slope. (courtesy of www.xcskiworld.com), u/ M, q% W& Z$ \

, w% v! @  N1 z- H7 A8 c7 e4 c2 gThe Ptarmigan Nordic Ski Club (PNSC) is the official cross country ski club in Fort McMurray. Their mission is to promote healthy, outdoor recreation in the city of Fort McMurray through cross country skiing.  Beautifully groomed trails offer the opportunity to explore the Boreal Forest by classic style cross country skiing or skating style skiing.

Ice fishing can be done on most lakes and streams around the province. Depending on ice conditions, the season generally runs from December through April. Local anglers build temporary sheds or simply drill holes and drop in a line. Just be sure to check local regulations before you head out.

Safety is always something to keep in mind, especially early and late in the season. Make sure the ice is at least 4 inches thick before you walk on it. Check the ice reports in your region before you head out, and play it smart.

An ice fishing house can really add some comfort to your day. Whether a portable shelter made of canvas or a shack with a loft and kitchen, an ice fishing house is a piece of luxury not to be overlooked!

An ice fishing shack no matter the style provides an angler with a number of luxuries. The biggest luxury is the ability to get out of the wind. While some love the comfort of the large ice fishing hut, others swear by the advantages of a portable ice fishing house. It is really up to you.
