You never know

One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
; i6 ~2 R3 N$ ]9 [
: u; p: ~5 {8 b4 pI saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
  G. i  g' c" r- m5 P7 M2 |" S) w9 \
His name was Kyle.
: Y8 e: L" L7 `; t' b) }" G- z4 ]1 W2 Q1 `3 i
It looked like he was carrying all of his
6 x& I8 e3 @3 J9 h, i$ X% @$ H3 u) xBooks.
6 Y- J$ v' n' [! }: }  w: O* a
# f0 t! J3 y& [# |3 jI thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?2 W4 U6 a0 ~" v2 S/ C9 D: p

- F2 g& }* p  s! R8 Z3 hHe must really be a nerd."# G: ?& a; z2 \) I! D9 Z, x

5 r0 p. O) o& oI had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.' Y- f0 e5 i3 Z% f# g0 o

. T- ?$ _4 z& ^+ R% ?. @7 |7 bAs I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.+ M1 k, P4 d! C" Z% M' \9 S: y# P
) E1 n3 }/ r; i
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
5 R7 k- J  r8 H8 x% c9 }; _4 D/ h6 ?) p% `6 K5 D4 c
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him.4 l# [8 Y  B( V% R: L  R/ [

5 D* G/ }7 `4 ?He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes  h9 `5 ?/ \9 C% H

2 j2 b* \& x) J" y  W6 n, N( hMy heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
: x) |& e3 V* ]5 m; i1 T! M5 y5 [( w4 v8 }
As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.  G. p8 A0 i$ R( r) n6 N# l
7 j, N, D) ^7 G/ ]% c2 `
They really should get lives.
- n7 j- |- U& F! k4 X! v* \/ ^% v. L* ^/ c3 i. F" X
" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"0 I4 ?* k2 ^# Q& c" U

& [/ g8 h/ K4 _There was a big smile on his face.% i! L' j7 x. @% V9 j  W( u

# ?8 Z$ w5 r1 O! K1 nIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude./ R) b, X2 I7 P. M1 X( S! G) _3 O- d
% i1 f- W6 i/ k6 i' [
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
  J! g9 c: u: ^( j& R' k. y: v9 h9 o4 Z' r5 G
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.
8 e% t7 `# O* h* k- p( d
$ E9 I* V9 ~# X$ ^2 QHe said he had gone to private school before now.* f: h+ _3 u1 p. y" ~+ ~! Z& c  Q* H; b
2 D5 H# C# W9 |/ B1 L' |1 T
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
/ S  O+ H5 J! r) k3 L1 n) V. G# Q" E
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books./ n* y  Z2 m; l+ `

0 U. V$ I: m) }! P& sHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
( Q/ F/ s5 Y3 n3 C, l% K* m* U4 Z/ I
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my friends.) ~2 W# U$ o9 v! G+ ]
' L) S1 G' D2 z, I( q% u
He said yes.
5 y" U* i5 G: R$ M3 c2 b# r. r* \% S8 F3 O. t" H9 y7 p
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
+ |: m7 H- H1 o3 {& u5 P; R6 t( j6 g0 S0 L5 a& f& }9 {( M
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.! `1 A1 I' K' i1 ]. c$ {

, }$ w3 H9 r$ a( Z- QI stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!! N# `5 w- v+ M, r+ w  v) ?
' \% O9 I- a& Q7 i5 j5 K0 v* G
" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
* q  \: Z! a2 x/ \" O! O# K" q! a8 x1 n6 I3 S6 s
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.
5 D' f" d; Y+ M3 M$ e1 ]0 O% E, b  R3 _* S& m  V
When we were seniors, we began to think$ K" E/ h' r$ l& k9 L  t2 j
About college.) H/ ?+ T% s0 N% z7 ]3 j* X

# g4 u5 }; k# i/ `+ x2 L( @) a5 iKyle decided on Georgetown, and I; `' \' h3 Z/ y* B+ c4 m, L7 v/ t
Was going to Duke.
3 x8 x, ~3 |+ l/ Z% o+ k5 H: f
% Z, ~$ D( g' I- x2 Y: i& WI knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem.
6 h9 @. i" n) w
; Z. K' R5 f+ D0 L# dHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.- w0 L1 S0 O1 r  A! r' |7 z: e! [5 D! ^
8 e1 l" D  q( `: R$ ]9 c. y: {
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
8 w/ c* m! c' D$ i+ i0 ^! ~' v, b; E9 U3 \$ j
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.2 r& u' D+ A4 E# l* S) P9 @) p
& E1 Q: s* f' w) Y# b
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.0 Q7 o& N8 j4 J6 ^/ N0 i

! r; n! u4 p) [4 VI was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak8 Z. I" q& o& [. L
1 q; t- E& h6 N, x3 [1 F
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.% {2 Y! Q. |: u: |

+ f* k; @8 W1 @" e. H: i; A* `He looked great.
/ i+ }4 [; y. c" N  s% ?9 B3 V3 R- Y
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.9 g6 f! E+ u4 g7 _) ?

0 }+ X* ]% }6 C7 \1 M2 `! THe filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
0 \" M& {6 U; H. ]2 g( w
2 S, z# E6 w& N" d% pHe had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
( F4 J* h0 z  A9 t$ _% X: |; z8 a* ~  P. H
Boy, sometimes I was jealous./ Y# o1 e2 ]% V* q

" W0 A9 U9 ?: N$ VToday was one of those days.5 r2 @) q1 t. Q& w' P3 k9 f

5 f2 d/ F+ e( s$ ?- R2 u. T2 jI could see that he was nervous about his speech.. Q: X; {' Z! W0 L3 Q9 {! n

" W1 l0 ~+ ?$ l% g6 ESo, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!"
2 l0 Z. v2 D6 i& Y) T* j
! w) M- Y1 s7 b. V9 W9 @% k4 THe looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.* B* n. l5 B* ~0 K+ i6 V1 K

5 z. c# m. i: x+ H9 K"Thanks," he said.8 }0 `; G' G- E! l4 ^/ @+ I( {
) b% X' s5 F3 Q4 X8 |
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
4 c' N- o& Z& g, T' T
; n3 b# p- j% f* S& N"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
+ }  U2 u% {( l" y5 M8 d" {5 ?
  f) t$ ?' i+ F! u! @) jYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...) H5 A3 ^' }; a% n% B

; d/ T. q- f! ~* z' ?. [2 P( O* ]! ^I am here to tell all of you that being a
$ p5 @4 k  c  G; YFriend to someone is the best gift you can give them.1 j& q4 l, {, U1 s' a
5 r/ q3 ?, v; h: `3 J+ h8 F
I am going to tell you a story."" y5 ]% f  l. m3 J

- [: ]1 b3 [# r, K8 ?% Z, s1 qI just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met.+ |; H$ w6 k- r, F4 g+ {- G
6 f) p8 b! ~$ [' J$ S9 w
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
% R/ `: d' K/ H$ J
, ?) C' o* b1 X' k3 h. NHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
  {' f2 y: F1 B9 j% x% _+ Y# E, p; M
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.1 q) K" q6 M  I( R" k
0 I, ^& F0 H+ q4 N0 c  k2 O4 ^# x
"Thankfully, I was saved.
/ T3 J* G6 U0 v; N4 ^, o8 q
( @/ G) o7 U" w& [/ y! L9 OMy friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.", L' Y  K$ w8 l5 B6 d  x; K

9 {3 L  M3 h7 h7 h- E. x7 i' b, rI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
, X) L1 ]7 J: X& O( ?5 x
7 ?( Y4 W2 \+ kI saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
; v& u5 Z9 H6 K$ C9 ^3 t  _* q- p( g% W( @
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
1 I) D' b8 n' k) z, O! T1 N; v) u+ y' r( l5 S$ R
Never underestimate the power of your actions.
! R* G4 u8 i7 C0 w5 g
& G  L3 Z+ ?4 Z! R' d$ G: s& gWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
/ l! z% r- Y9 K: u, E
2 s0 `) J3 T6 R5 V% NFor better or for worse.
" |! }  y' l6 D6 e6 b! P9 N% Y! z+ O" b1 `  \- ?* }. }2 X
God puts us all in each other's lives to impact one another in some way.' T/ `+ }8 C" ~9 N/ s

# H) c: ]# Q+ D. gLook for God in others.6 {& H! W2 ~* ~: @- T

) _% H* f" N9 _! q: L4 Q7 e- X0 `You now have two choices, you can:: d/ U( ]: J& Y3 E1 M. J4 U

: D* F1 t# L, Z3 }6 r1) Pass this on to your friends or. G- j& M7 p, o7 J. i7 X# v. e5 N

" W3 C/ @; c: T, i$ X9 ^$ T$ k2 H2) Delete it and act like it didn't touch your heart.

5 ?# I' [& ?/ {/ M' W/ [As you can see, I took choice number 1.
$ y3 Y9 z  N8 i9 k3 ^"Friends are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly.") R6 O& ?; b' w; L) I
! X" l% h, F6 |1 J; H# `7 X! \+ |
There is no beginning or end.. Yesterday is history.2 |5 t5 a' Y$ m# J
' o( @6 h: C; t8 ^4 ^
Tomorrow is mystery.) R1 j8 X  r  |$ Y# M% B9 A
9 Q( O+ F  E8 _1 d& o2 V0 p
Today is a gift.
