Why wear a poppy

“Please wear a poppy”, the old lady said. y' g. _1 R/ ?- V+ P' @1 ?% E% F
And held one forth, but I shook my head
7 o+ @+ g; [9 w' j; HThen I stopped and watched, to see how shed fare
% |, V. u/ H# rHer face was old, and lined with care, 4 x  t$ O/ F  L. Z  V7 u' |
Yet beneath the scars, the years had made - k( |& H6 L6 h0 D9 q8 G
There remained a smile that refused to fade. * w& D" ^) X( c* a+ d

% p& m( A1 A- ]1 KA boy came whistling down the street 6 s+ i8 l9 ]% H  b7 `2 |9 n
Bounding along on his carefree feet 7 f0 r/ b6 m! B
His smile was full of joy and fun
# Z, Y6 o8 H* n2 t& x* u3 { “Lady” he said, “can I have one? ' k7 T3 g/ o3 s) K+ y
As she pinned it on I heard him say
  O0 m6 u2 M! J% Z8 _“Why do we wear the poppy today?” 5 ^; n' K& i; U
The lady smiled in her wistful way : ~) A% R- D  q, O0 |$ g
And answered “this is remembrance day” ' q) W5 i, C, p

" m, {! W; j+ I# i1 q“The poppy is the symbol for the,
5 i# N, v% o4 T2 n" |The gallant men and women who died in the war”.
5 z( L5 L& F5 M. p! {  P9 Y “And because they did we are free, that’s why we wear the poppy you see”
# p5 z! c% r% B! z+ ^
! h$ c6 j% u9 l: e8 ~2 B. _) N“I had a boy about your size, with golden hair and big blue eyes,
5 k. ]+ |2 I# L3 |1 {He loved to play and jump and shout, free as a bird he would race about”
, u2 p0 S3 r' E1 j6 Q; [As the years went by he learnt and grew, and became a man as you will to”,
* W2 C3 }  x) H6 H1 ZHe was fine and strong with a boyish smile,
4 u. \. a+ `4 P: i5 d/ `8 }But he seemed to be with us a such a short while + D* q% o* w8 G3 U
When the War broke out he went away
" F* |8 Y- A7 Y( }4 ^I can still remember his face that day
1 C; Y7 g( \3 x3 V3 H" [! p! oWhen he smiled at me and said goodbye
* x1 |5 u8 P+ A/ ]5 z“I will be back soon, so please don’t cry” 9 O2 p! V2 s! D7 a) ]3 b
, e; O# q! ^( o
But the War went on and he had to stay $ E5 Q1 ~5 P6 y( s9 l  G2 ~4 J6 c
All I could do was wait and pray
5 s* P. r5 y' AHis letters told of an awful fight
6 Q! W: ^* Z; S4 k2 F4 fI can see it still in my dreams at night 4 N/ t! m" r0 a6 s
With the tanks and guns and the cruel barb wire 6 }# \' }3 b+ L3 j: `; \0 r
And the mines and bullets, the bombs and the fire   a0 y/ L5 h$ G. i! j/ o% X9 X; Q
Until at last the War was won . _/ e; W- w9 c7 [. ?
And that is why we wear the poppy son
1 B: k8 f. I2 L" O0 y5 a; P
( r4 }9 K) A& L, a0 _; L; f" ^% Z% rThe small boy turned as if to go - h% ~$ `& r1 Q
Then stopped and said “Thank you lady, I’m glad I know”
2 K3 A: l" m% |$ R: DThat sure did sound like an awful fight" O, w# g: Q' Z0 `$ A$ N
“But your son, did he come home all right”?
- w. L6 S- i( u$ }( S# B- L) C6 HA tear rolled down each faded cheek, she shook her head
/ d7 O3 Q7 B  O) Y4 F" }, u, K1 N3 DBut didn’t speak.: P$ W" L! T$ E% J! h# Q1 e

5 O0 B6 k7 _5 \' B7 hI slunk away, head bowed in shame, : _' q" H* G) a  {1 L
And if you were me, you’d have done the same, . [6 c* x  m; j' q  f% t1 \) _
For our thanks in giving is often delayed
/ N8 U- Z% s  }) T( A% ^Though our freedom was bought by the legions who paid. - |) G9 b$ L. q2 _) i! a5 L
  C" u1 @( N( ^1 D/ M( M/ r, c
And so, when you see a poppy worn
$ c) K; z! J: dLet us reflect on the burden borne % W) B% ]( [' F* S- k, z, u
By those who gave their precious all ) a. g/ @  B: p/ z
When asked to answer their countries call 4 ?2 N' K5 v" ]) J$ h9 Z
That we at home, in peace may live " C6 O, w  B: @3 U5 ]
Then wear a poppy, remember, and give.
