On April 27, 2006, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) announced the launch of a program to enable international students to work off campus. While the program has been launched by CIC there are a number of issues that need to be worked out before international students at the University of Alberta are able to participate in this program. We would anticipate being able to facilitate University of Alberta student participation by June 1, 2006. The following information will provide an introduction to the program.. The Off Campus Work Program Coordinator will confirm the student's eligibility and issue the required Verification Form.

Application instructions and application forms for a work permit are available at the CIC website. Note application for the work permit must be made within 2 months from the date the Verification Form was issued. Failure to make the application to CIC within two months will result in the expiration of the Verification Form and the student will be required to obtain a new Verification Form.

* T0 [, K9 U5 l6 e/ b# C. YThe work permit will be valid for the same duration as the student's study permit. Typically, study permits are valid for 90 days past the completion of the program of study to enable students to look for employment as a part of the post graduation employment program. The work permit issued for the off campus work permit program will continue to be valid during this 90 day post graduation employment period, thus permitting students to begin their post graduation employment with out delay. Please note, students are still required to apply for the post graduation work permit within 90 days of completing their program of study in order to be eligible to continue working in Canada

$ r$ S& j; B3 ^( o* J, hOnce issued a work permit students must continue to be registered full-time and maintain satisfactory academic standing. The University is obligated to report to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) any student who fails to meet the eligibility criteria. Students who do not meet the eligibility criteria must surrender their work permit to CIC. Students who surrender their work permit will be considered in good standing with CIC. Students who fail to surrender their work permit will be considered non-compliant. Students who are unsure if they meet the eligibility criteria should consult the Off Campus Work Program Coordinator at the International Centre as soon as possible to avoid non-compliant status.8 s' t' U( G l! f3 m
