你可能没理解for his hit spy and military-themed thrillers set这句吧？估计是set，这里的意思是（一系列），或者是hit，这里的意思是（成功的）

TC 因为他的冷战前后的一系列成功的谍战主题的惊悚片而广为人知。

感谢楼上诸位，这里 hit 应该是 noun 吧 , 如果在hit后面加个 on就好理解了

不能用on， hit on是“突然想到”的意思

hit这里虽然是名词，但更多的有形容词的作用，可以做（成功的，successful）理解

1) hit, noun, informal for widely appealing
2) set, verb (in the form of past participle). Here it means the settings of those thrillers are Cold War.

If not for a serious advanced test, you do not have to accurately understand every word or phrase and its background information.

这里理解关键应该是hit。Hit在美国俚语里有风靡一时的影视文学作品或是轰动一时的人和事。（意思是这些人和事或作品给人带来冲击感）。set是指成套的，应做“系列”讲。这样就好理解了。汤姆克兰西因他一系列描写冷战期间和冷战后的谍战以及军事题材的惊悚小说而广为人知。

the key word here is the word "hit". it should be "hits" (plural) and the word "on" should also be used after hits. the plural is required because the word "thrillers" (plural) was used later on in the sentence. alternatively, to use the word "hit on", the word "thrillers" will then need to be changed to "thriller". both are acceptable but the first scenario is more correct because we all know Tom Clancy has more than 1 "thrillers".
