抗议学校助学金太少!

When arrived to Edmonton to start my graduate studies on 2004, me and  ! P/ i% T1 f. k- j& o4 w( L
my friend rented a very nice, spacious and shiny 2-bedroom apartment  
6 n0 l) Q$ n/ b, Y/ |in one of the Boardwalk's high rise buildings (Galbraith House) for  
; J( P3 Z% G5 @* i9 {3 o680 CAD(everything was included), believe it or not the same apartment8 U( I/ g! ?7 Z' a+ z: m
  4 R  g/ P5 X+ {" h$ p: j
is more than 1300 CAD now.(I still have a copy of the contract and for; O) J1 {4 P2 ~" J" W+ G& u
  2 l# O) ]- Z3 a. p+ M

7 }( j2 {; W" fWhile I was paying 340CAD/month for more than a year, I抦 paying  
4 @6 @* t5 P0 g0 l! g7 L' a600CAD/month plus utilities right now, some thing around 700CAD/month.

' J1 D2 A5 _! b1 _- p# nOther costs of leaving have also increased and the university  
. f( g/ C4 b7 V( j; `increases the tuition fee by few percent every year and international  
9 N2 j0 |: l' X7 [( [2 [8 cdifferential fee was increased by almost 20% last year. Add to this,  
8 [% {9 C' ]# ^; gthe fact that the university housing has no more space for newcomers  8 q5 l  E0 q: g) r
and most of the newly admitted students who applied for housing were  " ?. K3 `  j( ]8 \
asked to look for a residence on open market.
- h: {2 v- K& l5 E" P0 @" X& S/ _* P; _
While the average cost of living for a typical graduate student has  4 l6 w; E% u- r: d4 e1 g1 n( k
increased by something more than 70% percent we are getting paid  , [- G/ @. z! a: i" V
exactly for the same amount of money that we were offered in our  * N& K  x" L# b4 m: M9 Y2 ^0 H" A
admission letter (18000 CAD + 1500 CAD for international students  0 c6 D  r' K: V* p" \' m5 O* l
=19500CAD. What I get is something around 1000CAD/month!!! after  
6 ^: |" ^! m& y& Q) otuition fee and taxes). To make the argument easy to understand just  9 Z8 B; c4 r$ V4 z& u
imagine that a new student gets the same amount of money that I am  
) l. B8 u; h4 ]getting now and I was getting 3 years ago but he or she (like all of  
) n* \4 d; t' z$ o, x3 t3 mus) has to pay twice as much as I was paying for housing when I was  ' ^1 q6 G) u! ]4 h0 y. P/ U9 _
admitted and has to incur at least 70% more in average living costs.6 l% H) h4 u" s
! E( H2 p  M0 n/ A
Also have in mind that Alberta is a rich province and University of  8 j  k+ F7 s( n7 F9 M
Alberta has a remarkable record in absorbing various money and grants  
. a. Y& ]* i+ E- w  z$ yfrom different governmental and non governmental sources and graduate  
5 g; z- r( p( z6 k6 a) Xstudents are the main pillars of research work at the university.
* J$ z, G( G5 Y3 [
6 h' T6 g1 ^4 y: V  @My objective in bringing all abovementioned points in your attention  8 \, k3 C7 N& _1 ]
is to question the adequacy of financial aid for graduate and  
2 U: [% B* h. }0 pespecially international students. Isn抰 it time for the GSA to take
# `% ?  B: r; ]& V2 Q9 c  & M/ W$ s4 ^% G/ Q6 m: [
initiative in raising the issue of increasing financial aid for  . q! [- ]( i" T: |" l
graduate students so that the can afford this increase in costs?
. f: x2 U& O% G( c- K/ J6 A9 E

It is true. Nobody cares about the international students. They are just making money from us.
