Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. * N1 \. {. \- H( P/ n) h

0 F) \, `! t- u. |7 a0 P8 eYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 3 @5 p& {: \! n D2 F" d
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
4 [/ G# J/ V9 O0 ^* l& Onews to report from that meeting.' h# _- z1 ]! p1 K
* A- ?1 T6 f4 a$ Z* z E" PFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
# @! A: J2 X3 Y1 l' Z8 T0 D- nundergraduate international students from the increase to the - m; c- t* M5 I: r6 P" W; y
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international ! ]0 ]' L! R( X0 R: ?
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base $ w; R" y* L4 T n* X- z
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
n- a* x6 x. z8 R4 C! E# aAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase - q1 ]8 u8 M6 w3 G8 V
the differential for international graduate students.; X( f. f9 f" J+ g0 x8 I5 N
# {- M/ N) a+ L; ~8 lNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
d; C& |9 Q# \9 S. S: V6 a! Kincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to ; V+ F& M% Q8 n: ]
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students # j- [* D6 ~; x: V) ^
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
1 C3 t% E$ n9 C" i$ W" Zleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 5 k! H2 f1 B0 U2 Z
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected 8 E1 I2 @# t+ ~
increases once they are here.
% j" ]/ v: W/ }- B" ^( u$ r0 z+ k' A9 |' P2 q ]- z& J
The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
G) d) e/ N$ l! d! [* d2 ?6 binternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I ' P8 y" E+ P" p$ u' o0 I/ O# Q) U
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
2 p( P3 J; |0 V1 `5 fhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
& d- T% @8 C8 Wincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your % f* Q* L) u% b2 `( R g+ k
