Edmonton — A week filled with talk about knife violence has ended with the stabbing of a 54-year-old north Edmonton man, who police say might have known his assailant.

Police said the victim was approached at his home near 102 Street and 136 Avenue Friday morning by a man, and the two shared a conversation before the scene turned violent.! n  q, F% b" [& m0 }5 P

“We’re in the process of doing the follow-up investigation to interview our complainant to determine whether or not the suspect is known to him and basically what was the basis of this crime,” north division Staff Sgt. Jamie Ewatski said yesterday.

He said police’s initial investigation suggests the assailant was armed with two knives.- ~+ ?6 P3 C5 k+ X; o

Ewatski added that the crime is being investigated as an aggravated assault, and not as a home invasion or a break-and-enter.0 v5 T, q7 p2 u

“From the information that we have, he just walked into the house, which kind of leads me to believe that there might be some relationship between the two, but of course we have to determine that,” Ewatski said.

He quickly retreated on the idea, admitting any sort of sales ban would likely be impractical, but continues to push for public education about the dangers of bladed weapons.3 ], h8 g6 U1 K4 ?; F7 p

Mandel has also floated the idea of requiring bars to install metal detectors, strengthening bylaws and encouraging more police enforcement.

Many of the ideas have surfaced after 21-year-old Brendan Malcolm McNaughton was stabbed to death behind a strip mall near 182 Street and 89 Avenue in the early morning hours of Feb. 21.3 @! A0 e5 \0 \
