story 3

Lawyers from Araav say government secrecy of the evidence in his case makes it impossible for Araav to testify on his own behave. The inquiry was called last year to investigate the roll Canadian officials played in Araav’s arrest, deportation, and detention in Syria. Araav says he was tortured for the last six months. The inquiry has been heard from government witnesses in secrecy to protect national security. Today, the hearings go public, and Araav’s lawyers argued that without more information Araav testify. K.P report.: g; y# j" A) T) X. Y

$ h0 a; i# d( K! a8 x0 a( _7 o3 @M. disappeared into the mosque        where he attends Friday Prays. Araav says his face has sustained in eight months since he has been shot out of the secret inquiry into his case. But some discovery Araav has made have left him wondering whose side Canadian government is on. One document released the public noticed that the just days after Araav were sequently from the Syria and in prison, a Canadian consular official managed to see him and ask Araav if he need anything. The document shows Araav answer that his Syria host said taking care everything, then it’s black out, but Araav obtain the same document through access to information and for it             . What’s no longer black out is the Canadian official reporting that Araav’s answer was dictated to him in Arabic by the Syrian in his room., k' J! e% b; h3 t
% q% i6 j. H4 S# M. d! w/ j( c  F: e
“I am just wondering why the government black out all this kind of information and you know personally what good for my mind when I see this kind of examples, I just you know, I say “ My god, what’s going on here?” And even though the inquiry here Araav says to go public, the government doesn’t want RCMP witnesses who have already testify behind close doors, to be requisitioned in open hearings. Government lawyer BM says even though they could decline to answer questions for reasons of national security, the public will assume the worst.
8 C9 u7 ~$ ]+ X( d) s; Z; R' k5 ?% g+ X, P2 K9 }6 o$ C5 a
“ It is inevitable that there will be a misleading story out there for the public, if they can not answer questions or for instance, if they can give a partial explanation only. It is because of government continue the secrecy that Araav won’t testify himself unless he and his lawyers have full access to what government witnesses have said about him. K.P. CBC news, Ottawa.
