NAIT fielding calls about Dell training

The computer company, which only sells its products over the phone and internet, will be hiring 500 people to man the phones at its new downtown centre, which should be up and running by the fall.

NAIT, which creates training programs geared towards new jobs, says people are already expressing interest in the program.

% v% Q+ |( K$ s, x9 {! c8 A"I even have some of my former students saying, 'Sam, gee, what's all this about. We'd like to work for such a great company like Dell,'" NAIT president Sam Shaw said. "The word gets out."

"These are not entry-level jobs. A lot of call centres, when you starting to get into high technology, some require PhDs," he said. "Not this one, but clearly diploma and a degree would be sort of the starting area."

( ]; F0 z2 p; I% O+ ~Dell is receiving $1.1 million in tax breaks from the city for locating here, and will be able to lease city land for a new building for $1 a year for 20 years. The company will lease existing space to start, but plans to build a new facility by 2006.
