9 W. F/ b. ?1 S4 b9 eThe mayor and 72 other delegates from Calgary are headed to China at the end of the month in an effort to attract oil and gas investors to southern Alberta, diversify exports to that country and promote tourism.

With 42 organizations on-board, including six energy companies, it's the largest mission abroad undertaken by Calgary Economic Development.+ A/ u9 b+ X& P6 c
! t0 c$ k% t$ R, W! tA highlight of the seven-day trip to Beijing and Shanghai will be an investment symposium, where anywhere from 75 to 100 investors are expected to hear presentations by Calgary companies.

"This is a real-life opportunity for them to break into the China market and get exposure to the state national oil companies," said John Hankins, vice-president of investment and trade development for CED. He said although it's rare that deals are signed on the spot, the mission will prove fruitful.0 p; N! i, w( o* G( ~2 Y E1 I
" P8 X( s4 x( ]"We are going to be able to open up some markets for companies," said Hankins, following a reception for delegates at the Global business centre in Calgary on Thursday.

The trip will be all work and no play, said Mayor Naheed Nenshi, although there will be an opportunity for a side trip to visit the great wall.- D W( M7 k0 P J# I+ t, o

He is paying for the trip out of his office budget, noting he's flying economy.
