A village in Mathira was in shock as a man was buried without a coffin. Wilson Macharia Thiong'o, 70 had indicated in his will, he wrote six year ago that he would be buried without a coffin. The hundreds of mourners in Githima village could not belief their eyes when the body was buried without a coffin.' T3 k+ ?1 i: i: _$ g4 v5 h
2 H2 } u6 Z- K4 T) xThiongo, a mole trapper, had also indicated in his will that during his burial, there would be no church ceremony, no cross, no tears, no prayers, no flowers and no eating. Macharia who was the father of nine children, did not belief in God. Macharia, alias Iddi Amin Dada, died of throat cancer last Tuesday.

The final journey started at Karatina District Hospital Mortuary yesterday morning. Macharia's body was carried in a pickup to Mathaithi. Immediately the cortege arrived at the village, the body was put in a stretcher. One bottle of second generations brew was poured onto his mouth because he loved alcohol. The body was then put in a sack with a with cap on the head.

+ b X2 T* Y: C% S6 SThe grave was nine by eight feet instead of the normal six by four feet. The body was not lowered gradually as is the norm, but was thrown into the grave. An impromptu harambee was conducted where few hundreds of shillings were raised at the graveside which was used to buy a goat to cleanse the burial.

/ M) p: R; U! w( aLater, he was covered with soil hurriedly but instead of flowers, plants like cassava, bananas, sweet potatoes and sugarcane among others, were planted on top of the grave at a coffee plantation. “The man who did not believe in God and had written in his three-page will that since their family is poor, he would not like an expensive burial,” said his brother Christopher Munyiri.

Macharia, he said, had asked them to dig for a deeper grave so that he will not wake up when God calls him. Robert Mureithi, who is a neigbour said, Macharia had told him that he would not want anybody to cry during his burial ceremony. Macharia's mother Nancy Kabui died almost a month ago." I!
