# {& N! |5 ?& l' a$ ^7 g) yI have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. ( s" w" J. A3 F0 ~: b
He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money ) b. m* I6 a$ M1 W. X
for youth at risk programs. 6 n. @. T- @/ n7 u# u
) Q8 ~7 O+ N+ `+ ]3 y) [
The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, 'I want to tell you ; g7 y# y' s0 G
why I let Jack use my house. It all goes back to a story about a young
( v1 J* h) k% v/ Xman who was the son of an itinerant horse trainer who would go from stable 9 u- [# }( T. [' b
to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training
* N3 ]8 T1 o4 c6 T/ Fhorses. As a result, the boy's high school career was continually interrupted.
* T' d! K6 H. A. bWhen he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about what he wanted - N: G/ {- I" d0 l' U" [5 P
to be and do when he grew up. ) R% Y, D8 R7 W: M7 [

. r! C. @" k, n" j* S/ Z8 N& m9 j'That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday ' R' W# S6 e3 x9 k! L
owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even
1 z3 m) t4 ~( A7 ~drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, ! V$ A! x& M; w+ E6 P1 z" f+ f* n$ b
the stables and the track. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot
+ N' g5 o5 b# \' ]house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch. 4 r& G& L8 z- w9 x! u+ ?

" T. ~" ?. y& K" \'He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he
8 }* {4 Q% E; D- A4 Zhanded it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back.
2 N7 T; N: X# A; R3 E$ ^On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after , f& o0 `4 D: N5 B* L( E/ d
class.' 2 _- H. L! E' H$ c4 I5 M

5 E# }* o. u& m( N0 R) g6 N) V/ J'The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, 4 k. Q: X2 Q7 `# V) O* V
`Why did I receive an F?'
0 q, e+ }" x" |' @
4 t! {! P9 c+ |5 M" E'The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you.
1 F/ D5 p% L6 t  T) h5 kYou have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. + h: L. J5 [/ y! {
Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. & k. L) @3 R/ c" G" A  r% C% B3 p
You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you'll have to ! G( r/ @2 s3 D* R; ]) O" K9 l4 |
pay large stud fees. There's no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher
. B5 t! J; d( W* fadded, `If you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will ' b6 y" v; Y5 X3 t0 l: b1 B
reconsider your grade.’
. d6 t" J1 t4 T/ n: {. @# d% M# K3 E
'The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father $ H# M$ ]5 [& o/ x
what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your 7 [; `4 b. s$ J. f* f" j, B
own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for
0 V* H- A- o: O. |you.’
0 S" I* d' H" u3 E/ Y: b0 R5 y9 @6 W% w2 z) F; {# E1 I1 ~2 T) s
'Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same
1 H: \3 {4 j; rpaper, making no changes at all. He stated, `You can keep the F and I'll ' h! l/ O- k9 R
keep my dream.'' 3 a: L, p' H( i) N' ^7 ?

2 l' T8 p8 D+ r8 Q, @Monty then turned to the assembled group and said, 'I tell you this story
# k- k: `2 X) P  E+ Obecause you are sitting in my 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of , O- J8 H9 S4 ~; [. N* M
my 200-acre horse ranch. I still have that school paper framed over the ( I$ a- d" d7 t* _# }! p
fireplace.' He added, 'The best part of the story is that two summers ago + Q. f+ G. P7 B8 ?2 s# b
that same schoolteacher brought 30 kids to camp out on my ranch for a week.' & @( D2 y' @9 ~$ \2 u5 e
When the teacher was leaving, he said, `Look, Monty, I can tell you this # }. p# ^. x7 c9 U# t0 A: Z
now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During
1 u! W8 C1 Z+ f6 othose years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption
; ~3 a8 T* |. @7 M3 Q  [not to give up on yours.’' . F  |% J, q0 |9 j* ?7 L7 ^

Don't let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.
